Likely causes
- Overheating outlet from a high-draw appliance or loose connection
- Damaged or melting insulation inside the outlet
- Arcing inside the wall behind the outlet
- Failing switchboard component — breaker, RCD or terminal
- Aluminium-wire connections deteriorating (older homes)
What to do
- Switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard
- Unplug any appliance from the outlet
- Don’t use the outlet or circuit again until inspected
- Call a licensed electrician the same day — burning smell = fire risk
