Why is there a burning smell from my power point?

A burning smell from an outlet, switch or switchboard is one of the few electrical signs that genuinely needs same-day attention. Don’t wait.

Likely causes

  • Overheating outlet from a high-draw appliance or loose connection
  • Damaged or melting insulation inside the outlet
  • Arcing inside the wall behind the outlet
  • Failing switchboard component — breaker, RCD or terminal
  • Aluminium-wire connections deteriorating (older homes)

What to do

  • Switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard
  • Unplug any appliance from the outlet
  • Don’t use the outlet or circuit again until inspected
  • Call a licensed electrician the same day — burning smell = fire risk

This is a high-urgency issue

If you\'re seeing this in your home or business right now, switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard and call us. We respond 24/7.
