When is it an electrical emergency?
Not every electrical issue is urgent — but some absolutely are. If you’re seeing or smelling any of the following, switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard and call us straight away. These are fire and electrocution risks that can escalate within minutes.
- Burning smell or smoke at an outlet, switch or the switchboard
- Sparks, arcing or a flash when plugging in or unplugging an appliance
- Visible scorch marks, melted plastic or discolouration on outlets
- The switchboard is buzzing, sizzling, humming or warm to the touch
- Total loss of power and your neighbours still have it (it’s not Energex — it’s your side of the meter)
- Partial power loss — lights work but outlets don’t, or one room is dark
- Exposed wiring after storm damage, water leak or a renovation accident
- An RCD (safety switch) won’t reset, or trips immediately every time
- Smoke alarm chirping continuously or alarming with no smoke present
- Water in or near electrical outlets, fittings or the switchboard
- Fallen power lines on the property (call Energex on 13 19 62 first, then us)
How much does an emergency electrician cost in Brisbane?
Emergency electrician pricing in Brisbane varies based on the time of day, the complexity of the fault, and any parts required. As a guide:
- Standard business hours callout (Mon–Sat, 7 AM – 6 PM): typically $150 – $250 callout + labour at standard rate
- After-hours callout (evenings): typically $250 – $400 callout + labour at after-hours rate
- Weekend and public holiday callouts: typically $300 – $500 callout + labour at premium rate
- Most simple emergency repairs (resetting a tripped safety switch, replacing a faulty outlet, isolating a damaged circuit) completed for $200 – $600 in total
- More complex faults requiring tracing or part replacement may run higher — we provide a fixed price before any work proceeds
We quote up-front before we start work. You confirm the price before we proceed — there are no hidden fees, no surprises when the bill arrives. If a make-safe is all that’s required tonight and the full repair can wait, we’ll do exactly that and quote the repair separately.
How fast can you get here?
Response time depends on where you are in SEQ and what we have on the road. For Brisbane inner-ring suburbs we’re usually on site within 30–60 minutes during business hours and within 60–90 minutes after hours. Outer suburbs and Gold Coast callouts may take a little longer. When you call, we give you a realistic ETA — we don’t over-promise to win the job. If we’re tied up on another emergency and can’t get there in time, we’ll tell you immediately so you can call someone else rather than wait.
What to do before we arrive
A few safety steps you can take while you wait — these reduce risk and often make the fault easier to diagnose:
- If you smell burning or see sparks, switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard (or the main switch if you’re unsure which circuit it is)
- Do not try to reset a tripping RCD repeatedly — if it trips once, leave it off and let us trace the fault
- Unplug appliances from any outlet that has sparked, scorched, or smelled hot
- Keep people and pets away from the affected area
- If there’s water near electrics, turn off the main switch before going near it
- If you see a fallen power line on your property, do not approach it — call Energex on 13 19 62 first, then call us
- If the smoke alarm is alarming with no smoke, open windows for ventilation but don’t pull the alarm off the ceiling — we’ll diagnose it
- Have your switchboard accessible — clear anything blocking the cabinet so we can get to work fast
How an emergency callout works
We aim to make the call as quick and stress-free as possible — and give you a realistic picture of what to expect.
- You call us — A real person — not a call centre — answers and quickly understands what’s happening. We confirm your address, give you an honest ETA, and walk you through any immediate safety steps over the phone.
- We dispatch and head to site — A licensed electrician with a fully-stocked vehicle is on the way. We text or call when we’re close so you know exactly when we’re arriving.
- On-site diagnosis and quote — We diagnose the fault, explain what’s happening in plain English, and give you a fixed-price quote to repair or make-safe. You decide before we start work — no surprises.
- Make-safe or full repair — For full repairs we proceed straight away. If the full repair needs parts or daylight, we make the site safe (isolate the faulty circuit, secure exposed conductors) and schedule the proper repair for the next available slot.
- Testing and certification — Any repair we complete is tested to AS/NZS 3000 and you receive a Certificate of Test on completion. If we’ve only made the site safe, you receive a clear written summary of what was done and what’s still required.
Common electrical emergencies we attend
The most frequent emergency callouts across Brisbane and SEQ fall into a few categories. Knowing which one you’re dealing with helps us bring the right parts on the first visit.
- No power at all (when neighbours still have it) — usually a tripped main, a fault on the consumer side of the meter, or a switchboard issue
- Partial power loss — one circuit, one room, or selected outlets dead — usually a tripped RCD, a faulty outlet in the chain, or a damaged cable
- Sparking or arcing outlets — worn contacts, loose terminals, short circuits, or in older homes, deteriorating wiring
- Burning smell at outlets or switchboards — overloaded circuits, melting plastic, aluminium-wire connections deteriorating, or arcing inside the wall
- RCD that won’t reset — a fault somewhere on that circuit that needs tracing, not a faulty RCD
- Storm damage — lightning surge through the property, fallen branches on power lines, water ingress to outdoor outlets
- Smoke alarms chirping or alarming with no smoke — wiring fault, end-of-life sensor, or a connected unit triggering the chain
- Hot water system electrical fault — heating element, thermostat, or contactor failure leaving you with no hot water
- EV charger fault — RCD trip, communication error, or a supply issue affecting charging
- Fallen power lines or storm-damaged service mains — Energex’s problem first, then ours once supply is safe
Is it Energex or is it your property?
One of the most useful things we do on the phone is help you work out whether the fault is on Energex’s side of the meter or yours. The rough rule: if your neighbours have power and you don’t, it’s on your side and you need an electrician. If the whole street is dark, it’s Energex and you should report it on 13 19 62 — they won’t charge you for that callout.
There are exceptions. A blown service fuse, damaged overhead service cable, or fault at the meter itself is Energex’s responsibility even when it only affects your home. We can usually tell from a short description over the phone, which means you don’t pay us a callout fee for something Energex needs to fix anyway. Honesty saves you money.
Why a licensed emergency electrician matters
In Queensland, only a licensed electrical contractor can legally carry out fixed electrical repairs. That’s not a technicality — it’s a safety and insurance issue. Work done by an unlicensed person can void your home insurance, fail a building inspection at sale time, and most importantly, leave a fault concealed that could cause a fire or electrocution months later.
Aurora is a fully licensed QLD electrical contractor (Licence EC91972), Master Electricians Australia members, with full public liability insurance. Every emergency repair we complete comes with a Certificate of Test. If the worst happens and you need to make a claim or sell the property, you have the paperwork that proves the work was done properly.
