MEDIUM URGENCY

Why does my power keep tripping?

Recurrent breaker trips usually point to overload, a faulty appliance, an RCD nuisance trip, or a wiring fault. Here’s how to narrow it down before calling.

Likely causes

  • Circuit overloaded — too many high-draw appliances on one circuit
  • Faulty appliance leaking current to earth
  • Damaged or aged RCD (safety switch)
  • Loose or damaged cable in the wall or ceiling
  • Old switchboard with worn breakers nearing end of life

What to do

  • Note exactly which breaker or RCD trips, and what you were running when it tripped
  • Try unplugging high-draw appliances one at a time to identify the culprit
  • If the RCD won’t reset after one try, leave it off and call — don’t keep flicking
  • If trips happen when nothing is running, it’s likely a wiring fault — book an inspection
