HIGH URGENCY

Why is my power point sparking?

A small spark when plugging in is sometimes normal. A large flash, sustained arcing or scorching is not — it’s a fire risk.

Likely causes

  • Worn or damaged outlet contacts
  • Loose terminal connections inside the outlet
  • Short circuit in the appliance or plug
  • Damaged or aged wiring behind the outlet
  • Water ingress — especially on outdoor or kitchen outlets

What to do

  • Switch off the affected circuit at the switchboard immediately
  • Do not use the outlet again until it’s been inspected
  • Unplug the appliance that was in use — test it later in a different outlet
  • Call a licensed electrician same-day, sooner if there are scorch marks or burning smell

This is a high-urgency issue
