MEDIUM URGENCY

Why is there no power to one room?

Partial power loss usually means a tripped breaker, a tripped RCD, or a single faulty outlet on a chain. Here’s how to find which.

Likely causes

  • Tripped breaker or RCD covering that circuit
  • Faulty outlet in the chain — outlets are wired in series, so one fault kills the rest
  • Loose neutral connection at an outlet upstream
  • Damaged cable in the wall or roof space
  • Burnt-out outlet that has tripped its circuit silently

What to do

  • Check the switchboard — is any breaker or RCD off, or sitting between on and off?
  • Try resetting once — if it trips again immediately, leave it off and call
  • If the breaker is on, look at every outlet in the affected room for scorching or damage
  • Don’t pull outlets apart yourself — call a licensed electrician
