MEDIUM URGENCY

Why are my lights flickering?

Flickering can be as simple as a loose bulb or as serious as a failing neutral connection. Diagnosis depends on whether it’s one light or many.

Likely causes

  • Loose bulb or LED driver
  • Incompatible dimmer with LED globes
  • Loose connection in the light fitting or switch
  • Failing neutral connection at the switchboard — dangerous, needs urgent inspection
  • Voltage fluctuations on the Energex supply (less common)

What to do

  • Single light only — tighten the bulb and try a known-good one
  • Multiple lights on one circuit — book an inspection of that circuit
  • Lights flicker when an appliance starts — likely a loose neutral or overloaded circuit; needs an electrician
  • Whole house flickering — check with neighbours; if everyone has it, it’s Energex; if just you, call us
